AI for persuasion: Navigating the opportunities and risks

Jingwen Zhang
University of California, Davis

In the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence (AI), Large Language Models (LLMs) present novel opportunities and challenges for persuasive communication. This working group will explore the current research landscape concerning the potential, use scenarios, and ethical implications of employing LLMs for generating persuasive messages and engaging in persuasive conversations across key domains such as marketing, public health, and political communication. We aim to understand and critically reflect on the integration of AI in shaping public opinion and influencing individual attitudes and behaviors. Key questions we will address include: 1) What are the principal ethical considerations in using AI for persuasion? 2) How can LLMs enhance the effectiveness of persuasive communication without compromising ethical standards? 3) What are the theoretical and practical research directions for AI in persuasion? Through interactive discussions and small group brainstorming activities, the session seeks to chart key research developments and gaps and develop a roadmap for future research. The session will conclude with the drafting of a working paper outline on AI for persuasion, summarizing our findings and recommendations.
