Single-case experiments to accelerate a person-specific paradigm in Communication

David Lydon-Staley

We come away from most of our empirical studies with an understanding of how processes unfold for the “average” or “prototypical” person in our collected sample. But who is this average person? And is what we learn about this average person relevant to how you function? This working group will discuss a person-specific paradigm that can take us beyond the idea of the “average” person. We will 1) ask how taking a person-specific perspective changes the types of questions we can ask and answer, 2) learn how to put a person-specific perspective into action by overviewing single-case experimental design, 3) design single-case experiments specific to your research interests to identify opportunities and challenges associated with using single-case experiments to study Communication phenomena.
