(Re)Configurating audience: Past, present, and future
Over the past decades, the communication landscape has undergone a dramatic transformation driven by the surge in electronic media, internet platforms, social media, and AI innovations. These technological advancements have reshaped the role and nature of the audience, prompting us to reconsider their position as more than just passive receivers. In this era of AI-enhanced communication, audiences are emerging as active participants, interacting with and influencing the very content they consume. This shift raises profound questions about how we understand and engage with modern audiences. Our panel aims to explore the ways in which these changes have impacted audience engagement and behaviors. We will delve into what remains constant and what has evolved, critically evaluating the adequacy of current tools and metrics used to analyze audience dynamics. Are the measures we have relied upon still relevant, or do they require a fundamental rethinking to capture the complexities of modern audience interactions effectively? Furthermore, this reevaluation compels us to reconsider our research designs to ensure they accurately reflect these new dynamics. As AI increasingly becomes a mediator in communication, we may adapt our approaches to audience analysis to better align with the rapidly evolving digital and AI-influenced landscape.
