Balancing precision and generality: Exploring integration of basic and applied theories in complex phenomena
The interdisciplinary nature of communication studies in the US has fostered a rich array of theories and concepts, contributing to our understanding of human behavior, social interaction, and cultural dynamics. However, the diverse range of theories utilized often varies in precision and generality: Basic theories often lack the precise predictions necessary for practical applications, while applied models may lack broader applicability. This has presented challenges in synthesizing disparate perspectives and advancing a unified understanding of communication phenomena. To address this challenge, our working group aims to foster dialogue around integrating theories and constructs with varying precision and generality levels. Specific questions include: 1) What constitutes the optimal balance between precision and generalization in navigating this trade-off? 2) Which existing theories hold potential for enriching our understanding by integrating with fundamental processes? 3) What obstacles might arise in integrating context-dependent theories with fundamental processes empirically, and how can we overcome them?
